One way or another, the federal government is likely to take over the retirement plans, including health care, that are now the responsibility of Chrysler and GM. These too are 'too big to fail'. The failure of business to live up to it's obligations puts the responsibility for retirement and health care in the hands of the government one enterprise at a time.
Like it or not the government cleans up the environment (think EPA superfund and global warming), protects retirement, and provides health care as corporations, which made their leaders wealthy and impoverished so many others, fail.
This is surely socialism the hard way. A few big winners and so many losers. Can't we do better?[1]
