In today's NYT, Bob Herbert deplores the state of America. Pointing to a lack of educational commitment, inequitable income structure, and a crumbling infrastructure as examples.[1]
Bob, you don't get it. This is the way capitalism works in America. The wealthy one percent don't give a damn about these things. As long as they can buy their way around them that's not going to change.
For example: Why should a Fortune 500 CEO care about education in America? It's cheaper to go to Europe, or Asia, or India and hire the needed talent. More socialistic countries pay for their education and then they come here and work cheap. The CEO wins. Need evidence? How many times have you heard a CEO complain about the lack of H1B visas? More H1Bs gets you more imported talent. Much cheaper than fixing education in this country.
Asking the American people to rise up and think is working the wrong end of the problem. Find a way to make it in the CEO's economic interest might do it. That's the way capitalism works in America.
Cynically yours...
