During the brief period in California when gender was not a criteria for marriage, 22 thousand same sex couples were married. As a result of Proposition 8, the economic cost of sorting out the status of those couples is potentially huge. It will be borne by the state, many other affected institutions such as hospitals which must decide spousal consent, and the couples themselves. The human cost is inestimable.
