Should the federal government assist faith-based organizations? Senator Barack Obama today proposed a program of federal grants to faith-based social service organizations (an initiative started by President George Bush). Said Obama, "...we all have to work together – Christian and Jew, Hindu and Muslim; believer and non-believer alike – to meet the challenges of the 21st century." Recipients of federal grants would be barred from proselytizing to the people who receive services, and would be prohibited from discrimination on religious grounds, including hiring.
