A year ago, in a democratic election from hell, Hamas, never more than a terrorist organization to Israel and the US, won the leadership of Gaza. They went from a thorn in the side of the Gaza government to being the government. The mantle of responsibility is both new and heavy. It also seems to be having a therapeutic effect. If they want to sustain a truce with Israel they must stop firing their missiles into Israel. They must take responsibility for the acts of their people. That's a very new reality for Hamas, but the notion seems to be sinking in. One can hope that today's actions are a seminal moment.
