NYT reports that The Department of Homeland Security is routinely searching laptops at airports when Americans re-enter the United States from abroad. In a blog entry, Professor Steven M. Bellovin argues that this extrapolates to examination of all cross border internet traffic, since the laptop and the internet are but different media for the same information search. Such conduct goes way beyond any enabling legislation.
